The Valle de Oro National Wildlife Refuge has provided outstanding partnership opportunities for Talking Talons Youth Leadership. This week, TTYL hosted a service-learning day for middle school students from the Abq Sign Language Academy (ASLA). Together, we seeded 2 acres of upland habitat and marked and gave water to the seedlings planted previously during the Audubon and Coca Cola service day. Welcome to this week's #TransformationThursday, your weekly opportunity to learn about all the exciting projects happening on and around YOUR Valle de Oro National Wildlife Refuge.

It's here! Our Community Update is TODAY from 5:30pm to 7pm at the Mountain View Community Center! If you have questions you want to ask about projects on the refuge or some near by, come check it out. There will be FREE food, kids activities, Spanish and Sign Language interpretation and our friendly Valle de Oro staff and partners there to answer your questions and hear your ideas. Representatives from Bernalillo County will be be joining us and sharing info about the 2nd street project and introducing an exciting new project to create native habitat at our local community centers. Please join us!

Our updates this week have to do with two community planting events that happened on the refuge this past week. Both events are part of our effort to restore upland habitats to the southeastern part of the refuge near the new playa wetland.

First was a very successful event co-hosted by our partners at Audubon New Mexico and sponsored by Coca Cola. We had 50 Coca Cola employees and Audubon members come out and plant 4 acres of upland habitat with small seedlings and spread native grass and flower seeds. We followed that by a series of educational talks on the importance of water in the Middle Rio Grande and how we can all be involved in conservation in our community. Thanks to our partners at Audubon and New Mexico and Coca Cola for such a great day!

Just two days after the Audubon and Coca Cola event we had another habitat restoration day with middle school students from the Abq Sign Language Academy (ASLA). This service day was co-hosted by our partners at Talking Talons Youth Leaderships with some funding from the EPA. Students from ASLA seeded 2 acres of upland habitat and marked and gave water to the seedlings planted in the earlier Audubon and Coca Cola service day.

Now all we need is some good rain to get these seedlings and seeds growing!!!!
