Why we do what we do...

Angela Meisner shared a personal story that illustrates the multiple benefits of TTYL out of school programs. As a parent of a student in Climate Club at Roosevelt Middle School, Angela explained that her child first joined Coyote Club because she loves nature and is concerned about the impact of climate change.  Ms. Meisner pointed out that her daughter has dyslexia and so she has benefited from the hands-on learning that TTYL provides.  She notes, “TTYL leadership programming is perfect for a kid like her who is very social.”

Angela also explained that at family events, TTYL kids are asked to lead the activities and teach the families what they have learned.  She watched as Program Coordinator, Amy gave a student a pep talk before speaking to a large group of adults.  According to Ms. Meisner, Amy spoke to the student as an educator, mom, and friend all wrapped up into one person.  She emphasized that she won’t forget seeing the student speak confidently with Amy’s support and encouragement. Angela noted, “I’ve seen the transformative effect that the staff have had on the kids by not only teaching them but by supporting them and giving them the confidence to become youth leaders.”
